Creative Activities You Can Do at Home in Coronavirus Quarantine

COVID-19 is hitting us all hard right now, especially in Washington. In a state with notoriously gloomy April weather, it’s been lovely to see a little sun, but that simply isn’t enough to brighten spirits in the face of mandatory self-isolation. Fortunately, we at Rob Rice Homes have brainstormed a few quarantine-friendly games and creative activities you can do at home to help you entertain yourself and your family while we wait for the pandemic to pass.

For those near our Steilacoom Ridge and Bradbury communities, in Lacey and Tumwater, respectively, the majority of fields, playgrounds and trails are closed, but this is a great opportunity to take a walk around your neighborhood. Enjoy the trees and flowers that are starting to bud and take in some of the rare sunshine we’ve been experiencing. While you’re out, you and your kids can have fun playing quarantine-friendly games like I Spy and Alphabet Hunt (take turns spotting things that begin with each letter of the alphabet, in order), or taking pictures of things you see on your walk.

Social distancing measures indicate that individuals who haven’t been in self-isolation together must be at least six feet apart, and masks and gloves are highly recommended by the CDC. Experts recommend visiting with neighbors and friends

virtually, instead of asking them to join your walk, just to be safe. It can also lift your spirits to make a phone or video call while on a solo stroll, giving you the social interaction of talking to a friend while getting a healthy dose of fresh air.

Since we’re all stuck at home, this is an awesome opportunity to get out in the backyard and get your hands dirty! Gardening is a great activity to do in self-isolation, and now is a great time to start. Hardware supply stores have been deemed essential and remain open; stop by and (carefully) pick up some flowers, seeds and other plants to liven up your property for spring! Indoor plants purify the air and add life to your home décor, so your home won’t feel quite so dreary.

If you’re feeling especially handy, entertain yourself in self-isolation by building raised beds for a vegetable garden. Here is a great tutorial from our neighbors at Lowe’s. If you have the energy for it, there has never been a better time to try your hand at easy home improvement projects. Rob Rice Homes’ fenced backyards and large plots of land allow for creative self-expression while incorporating fresh air and appropriate social distancing!

If the kids need a little DIY recess, or just a break from their screens, get creative! You can turn them out into the backyard for outdoor sports, or try some of these quarantine-friendly games. The Copycat Game is great for toddlers, and Chair Hat Toss and Balloon Tennis are terrific to entertain older children on a rainy day. Yes, we all wish we had a thousand trampolines and a magic potion to wear them out, but it’s possible to make do with a little ingenuity.
