The benefits of living in a community with a homeowners association (HOA)

Millions of Americans today now live in communities governed by homeowner associations. In fact, one in six Americans now live in communities regulated by HOAs.

People enjoy living in communities with HOAs. A poll of 709 people by Zogby International showed that for every homeowner who rated the overall experience of living in a homeowner association as negative, seven saw it as positive.

But why do homeowners love living in a community with a homeowner’s association? It mainly boils down to these reasons.

Homeowner Associations protect the property values of individual homeowners. This is the main goal of HOAs. To live in a community with an HOA, a resident must agree to abide by certain rules and standards, such as proper maintenance of the house and lawn. By enforcing these rules, the HOA helps maintain the aesthetics of the community, which in turn maintains the values of all the homes of the community.

HOAs provide and maintain essential services like security and recreational facilities. Many communities have amenities like a pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, dog park, or gated entry. The upkeep of these facilities are provided by your HOA.

HOAs create a community environment. When your community has an HOA, you’re living in a community where every member of the community has agreed to a set of rules. Many HOAs also organize community events designed for you to get to know other residents and build more of a “neighborhood” feeling. And the “common area” facilities like the pool and gym act as natural meeting places for you to share with your neighbors.
